Our ongoing commitment to sustainability. Improving the lives of farmers and their families.
Growing Together: Sustainability...
We are fully committed to sustainability, which results from a responsible approach to both product sourcing and production. This approach will help to improve the lives of farmers and their families.
Kenyan Dawn™ Coffee
By choosing this coffee, you are supporting 2,500 small-scale farmers in the Kiambu district of Kenya – the Ndumberi cooperative.
- We work with this cooperative to improve production efficiency and bean quality, enabling these farmers to sell their coffee for more.
- We contribute regular funds, which in 2006 were used to improve fermentation and soaking tanks, washing channels and drying tables. In 2007, investment is planned to construct a health clinic.
- Since our involvement and investment in Kenya, farmers payments per pound of product have increased by over 200%, and cherry yields have risen threefold.

Enduring Relationships: QUALITY
FLAVIA® offers a number of coffees from single origins including Sumatra, Colombia and Kenya. Many of our coffees are sourced from producers at origin that have been audited to meet high standards and practices of operation.
Frequently asked questions:
- Is Brighter Tomorrow at Origin similar to Fairtrade?
- The aim of Fairtrade is to guarantee disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. This system works by paying a premium that producers can invest in development. We have chosen to channel our investment in a different way, working directly with farmers at origin. The focus of our program is quality; by helping our producers improve production efficiency and bean quality, we are directly supporting their local communities.
- What is the environment impact of filterpacks? Are they recyclable?
- A FLAVIA® filterpack weighs just .08 oz., less than half the weight of a soft drink bottle cap, and consists of very few materials. Mars Drinks is currently partnering with select distributors to participate in the Bright Idea "energy recovery" program, which is designed to turn our filterpacks into usable energy.
- Which FLAVIA® drinks are sustainable?
- We only deal with partners who trade responsibly. This means that for some of our range we can source from where the product originates, that the conditions there are safe and supportive for the farmers and their families and that they have the means to develop their businesses. We are very proud to offer both a sustainable coffee - Kenyan Dawn™, and sustainable tea - Malawi Garden™.
